Vaile to open first Desert Knowledge Precinct building

Alice Springs will move closer to becoming a centre for outback innovation today.

Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile is due to open the first building in the Desert Knowledge Precinct, south of the central Australian town, this morning.

The $2.5 million business innovation centre will be the headquarters for Desert Knowledge Australia, the Cooperative Research Centre and an Indigenous education consortium.

The chief executive of Desert Knowledge Australia, John Huigen, says the project has been eight years in the making.

"I imagine the precinct won't be complete for quite a number of years as additional knowledge-rich organisations are attracted into the precinct," he said.

"The idea of the precinct is to create a real hub of critical mass of knowledge-rich organisations to encourage collaboration and cooperation. It's a bit like a technology park, if you like."
