Drought stricken pastoralists get extra assistance

There's relief in sight for drought-affected pastoralists south-east of Alice Springs.

The Federal Government's declared the region is eligible for exceptional circumstances assistance.

The Cattlemen's Association has been lobbying the Government for the declaration on behalf of about 30 property owners.

The Association's President Roy Chisholm says they'll now be able to apply for interest subsidies to help them through the drought.

"Some properties have been down there and had virtually no income or definitely below normal income for the past five to seven years," he said.

"You know, it is an exceptional time business-wise for people to try and survive so that assistance will definitely make a difference."
